O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents at home in Wheaton (Illinois) where she was a graduate of the North High School in Wheaton. Prior to moving from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. O'Grady's career began as model and actress for commercials with Montgomery Ward. She first appeared on screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was later cast in the main character in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Also, she appeared on a number of other shows and appeared in made for television and independent movies. Donna Abandando played her first leading role on ABC's NYPD Blue, a police drama. Her role as the tall blonde team secretary in the series from 1993 until 1996. Each of the years, she received the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in the Drama Series. The cast and O'Grady received the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance in the Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
