O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. She advanced into the top 100 rounds since the judges were impressed with her performance. O'Neil had received high praise from judges. But she was a victim of massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was within the bottom three and then in the bottom two. This shocked the judges, and they recommended that people decide for Melissa O'Neil, who was one of the contestants with the greatest ability to sing. O'Neil, who had been consistently delivering stellar performances ever since, has never fell below the third place. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and became the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in history of the show. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
